DJI Mavic 4 Pro Review: 6K Master – 100MP Giant or Simply Infinite Vision?

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro promises professional image quality with 100-megapixel photos and 6K videos at 60 frames per second. It also boasts impressive flight time and omnidirectional safety features. We tested the drone to find out if it's the ultimate choice for content creators, cinematographers, and demanding hobby pilots.

First Impression & Included Accessories

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro typically comes with a robust transport case or a high-quality fabric bag. The scope of delivery is comprehensive, as is customary for DJI: in addition to the drone itself, you'll find the remote controller with an integrated display, multiple batteries, a multi-charger, spare propellers, and all necessary cables. Everything is neatly packaged, and the instructions are clearly formulated, ideal for a quick start.

The scope of delivery may vary depending on the edition purchased (e.g., Standard, Fly More Combo).

Design & Build Quality

The Mavic 4 Pro continues the design language of its predecessors. The high-quality plastic casing appears robust. The folding mechanisms are precise and play-free. When folded, the drone is compact, though at 2.3 pounds, it's not a lightweight. It fits into many camera backpacks and is easily transportable for travelers.

The design is functional: sensors for obstacle detection are seamlessly integrated, and propeller arms fold in and out easily. The gimbal is protected and stable. Even smaller details like ventilation slots or USB-C ports exhibit typical DJI quality.

  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Flight Time: 51 min
  • Range: 18.6 miles
  • Sensor Size: 4/3 inch
  • Photo Resolution: 100 MP
  • FAA Regulations: Requires registration and Remote ID
  • Camera Resolution: 6K/60fps
  • Internal Storage: 64 GB
  • Obstacle Detection: Omnidirectional + LiDAR
  • Max. Speed: 82 ft/s (approx. 56 mph)

These specifications clearly position the Mavic 4 Pro in the professional segment. Particularly noteworthy are the large 4/3-inch sensor, which is exceptional for drones of this size, and the impressive 51-minute flight time. The maximum range of 18.6 miles is achievable under optimal conditions, while visual line of sight to the drone is legally required. The optical zoom significantly increases compositional flexibility.

Camera & Image Quality

This is where the DJI Mavic 4 Pro shines the most. The 4/3-inch sensor combined with the 100-megapixel photo resolution and 6K/60fps video option sets new benchmarks.

  • 100MP Photos: In testing, the Mavic 4 Pro delivered breathtaking detail and impressive dynamic range, even at sunset. Fine structures in shadows and highlights were preserved. Noise is excellently controlled, even in poorer lighting conditions. This resolution is ideal for large-format prints or subsequent cropping. The images are tack-sharp and vibrant, but never oversaturated.
  • 6K/60fps Videos: The video quality is phenomenal. The footage is incredibly detailed and smooth. 60 frames per second at 6K allow for buttery-smooth movements and impressive slow-motion in high resolution. The 3-axis gimbal performs admirably; even in light winds, footage was stable and jitter-free. The 360° infinity gimbal allows for creative camera movements, enabling the camera to pan completely upwards or downwards during flight. When tracking a jogging person, the stability was fully evident; the person remained sharply in focus at all times.
  • Low-Light & Night Shots: A major advantage of the larger sensor is its performance in low-light conditions. In night shots and at dusk, the Mavic 4 Pro delivered impressive results. Noise behavior is minimal, and the drone still captures sufficient detail in dark areas. The difference to drones with smaller sensors is significant here.
  • The 4/3-inch sensor in the Mavic 4 Pro is significantly larger than typical drone sensors, which greatly enhances its low-light capability and overall image quality, making it comparable to some professional photography cameras.

  • Optical Zoom: The 6x optical zoom is a fantastic tool. It allows you to bring subjects closer without having to put the drone itself in dangerous proximity. This is useful in sensitive environments or when you do not have permission to fly over certain areas. The quality of the zoom is excellent, and there is hardly any discernible quality loss within the optical zoom range.

Use the high resolution of the photos not only for final products but also to create image crops later without losing quality.

Flight Behavior & Control

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro offers a first-class flying experience. Takeoff is smooth and precise. The drone remains extremely stable in the air, even in light winds (up to approximately 12.4 mph in testing). Control via the included remote controller with an integrated display is intuitive. The screen is bright and easily readable, even in direct sunlight.

Response times are excellent, and the sticks have pleasant resistance. The maximum speed of 82 ft/s (approx. 56 mph) allows for quick shots. However, for delicate shots, the drone can also be flown very slowly and precisely.

Obstacle Detection & Safety

Safety is a top priority with the Mavic 4 Pro. The omnidirectional obstacle detection is outstanding. Sensors reliably detect obstacles to the front, back, top, bottom, and sides.

Additionally, a LiDAR system is integrated, which creates a three-dimensional map of the environment, enabling even more accurate and reliable mapping of the airspace. This is particularly helpful for more complex tracking maneuvers or in unclear terrain. When tracking a jogging person, the drone navigated around trees and other obstacles without issue.

When approaching obstacles, the drone gently brakes or flies around them, depending on the setting. This increases safety and significantly reduces the risk of collision.

Even the best obstacle detection has its limits. Thin objects like power lines or branches may not always be reliably detected. Always fly preemptively and keep the drone within visual line of sight.

App & Intelligent Modes

The DJI Fly App is the heart of control and offers a variety of intelligent flight modes. From QuickShots like Dronie, Rocket, or Circle, which create cinematic short videos, to more complex tracking modes like ActiveTrack.

The QuickShot recordings at the beach were impressive. With a few taps, the drone automatically created stunning videos.

ActiveTrack in its 4th generation is convincing. The drone reliably recognizes and tracks objects or people, even with movement in the terrain or changing perspectives. Thanks to LiDAR support, tracking is more precise, and the drone can better circumvent obstacles.

Other modes like Waypoint Flight (flying along predefined points), Spotlight (camera fixed on object, drone flies freely), or MasterShots offer creative possibilities. App operation is intuitive, well-structured, and quickly learnable, even for beginners.

Battery & Flight Time

The stated flight time of 51 minutes is impressively close to reality in practical testing. With moderate flight behavior and ideal weather conditions, the drone achieved about 45-48 minutes. This is an important step forward, as it allows more time for shot planning and on-set experimentation. Three batteries in the Fly More Combo provide almost two and a half hours of pure flight time, sufficient for most projects. Recharging the batteries is quick thanks to the multi-charger.

Investing in the Fly More Combo is highly recommended for professionals and serious hobbyists, as the extended flight time from multiple batteries significantly enhances productivity and creative opportunities on location.

US Drone Regulations

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro weighs 2.3 pounds (over 0.55 pounds or 250 grams), which means it requires registration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for all operators in the US. Additionally, it must broadcast Remote ID information.

  • Recreational Use: For recreational flying, operators must pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST).
  • Commercial Use: For commercial operations (e.g., professional photography, videography), operators must obtain an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Operation: Always fly within visual line of sight and adhere to FAA regulations regarding airspace restrictions, altitude limits, and avoiding flights over people or moving vehicles unless operating under specific Part 107 waivers or exceptions.

Before each flight, inform yourself about current FAA regulations and any local restrictions. Rules may change.

Comparison with the Competition

In the segment of high-end foldable drones, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro competes mainly with its own products or those from niche providers.

Compared to the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, its direct predecessor, the Mavic 4 Pro offers a more modern sensor (4/3-inch, higher MP count and 6K/60fps instead of 5.1K), an even more precise omnidirectional obstacle detection system with LiDAR, and a longer flight time (51 min vs. 43 min). The 6x optical zoom is also an upgrade.

Other manufacturers like Autel with their Autel Evo Lite+ also offer good camera quality and long flight times, but rarely achieve the same sophisticated software, gimbal stabilization reliability, or precise obstacle detection as DJI. The 4/3-inch sensor size is rarely found in competitors in this form factor.

For the price the Mavic 4 Pro will command, it offers an overall package that is currently hard to beat in terms of camera quality, flight safety, and intelligence, clearly targeting semi-professionals and professionals who don't want to compromise.
