Sony Expands Tech Portfolio with AI Robotics, New Mobile Sensors, and Strategic Ventures

Sony announces a new RB2x2 OCL mobile sensor, an origami-inspired surgical robot, and a competitive sports AI named Ace.

Sony has been busy expanding its technological reach, moving beyond consumer electronics into specialized fields like medical robotics, professional sports broadcasting, and advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The company is positioning itself as a key infrastructure provider for both the digital and physical worlds.

Advanced Imaging Sensors for Mobile and Medical Use

Sony Semiconductor Solutions has announced a new 1/2-type CMOS sensor designed for mobile applications. According to the manufacturer, this sensor features the industry's first RB2x2 OCL pixel structure, which Sony claims provides 20% higher definition for mobile devices.

In the medical and industrial sectors, the company has developed an X-ray CMOS sensor. Sony lists the following technical highlights for this component:

  • High-speed imaging capabilities
  • Low-noise performance
  • Photon-level data acquisition

Robotics in Surgery and Competitive Sports

On a different front, Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) has developed an origami-inspired surgical robot. The company reports that this device successfully achieved a subretinal injection in an animal model, demonstrating the precision required for delicate eye procedures.

Meanwhile, Sony AI has introduced "Ace," a robot that has defeated elite human players in a competitive physical sport. The research behind this project was published in the journal Nature, marking a significant step for real-world artificial intelligence and robotics. While many AI developments remain digital, Ace represents a shift toward physical, high-speed interaction.

Strategic Partnerships and Manufacturing Ventures

Beyond hardware, Sony is forming several high-level business alliances. The company signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aramco and agreed to a joint venture with TSMC regarding semiconductor production. In the home entertainment field, Sony and TCL have signed definitive agreements for a strategic partnership.

The company is also focusing on industrial automation through the following initiatives:

  • A joint venture with Mitsubishi Electric for AI vision sensor solutions in manufacturing.
  • The establishment of a Digital Media Production Center in Japan for virtual production and XR workflows.
  • A co-creation partnership with Berlin Phil Media to develop new ways to experience performing arts.

Global Sports and Community Support

In related news, Sony has become an Official Global Partner for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. The company will provide the broadcast and event technologies used during the competition. Additionally, the TAIDO Project has been established to facilitate animation co-production between Japanese and African studios, expanding Sony's creative footprint.

The company is also addressing regional crises, donating approximately 110 million yen to support communities affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake. Looking ahead, the Sony Innovation Fund is scheduled to exhibit its investment activities and co-creation initiatives at CEATEC 2026.

These diverse projects indicate that Sony is shifting its focus toward integrated AI and specialized sensor hardware. By partnering with major manufacturers and entering the medical field, the company is diversifying its revenue streams beyond traditional gaming and home audio.
