Samsung Expands Infrastructure Footprint with Private 5G and $1 Billion AI Investment

Samsung deploys Korea's first financial private 5G smart office and leads a $1 billion investment in Helix to address AI power and data center needs.

Samsung has been busy expanding its footprint in both physical and digital infrastructure, moving beyond consumer electronics to secure a role in the backbone of modern business. The company is currently focusing on high-capacity connectivity for the financial sector and large-scale energy solutions for artificial intelligence.

Private 5G Networks Enter the Financial Sector

A 16-floor smart office in Incheon, South Korea, now serves as the first financial sector deployment of a private 5G network in the country. Samsung Electronics is the sole vendor for this project at the new Hana Financial Group headquarters, providing a dedicated infrastructure that operates independently of public mobile networks. What stands out visually in this environment is the shift toward mobile productivity, as thousands of employees across multiple affiliates use 5G-enabled laptops, tablets, and mobile devices to conduct daily operations.

According to Samsung, the network utilizes the 4.7GHz mid-band spectrum, which is specifically dedicated to private 5G use in Korea. The technical stack includes Samsung’s 5G Standalone Core, radios, and baseband units. To manage the needs of different subsidiaries, the system employs network slicing technology. This creates separate, virtualized environments on the same physical hardware, ensuring that data for one affiliate remains isolated from others. Security measures for this regulated environment include USIM-based authentication, enhanced encryption, firewalls, and DDoS protection.

Samsung Commits $1 Billion to AI Infrastructure

On a different front, Samsung is addressing the physical power and data requirements of the AI industry. Samsung Electronics and five of its affiliates are investing a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure. Samsung Electronics is contributing $500 million of that total. Helix is a specialized AI infrastructure firm established by KKR in June 2026 and is led by Adam Selipsky, the former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The investment targets the primary bottleneck of modern AI: power availability. Helix provides integrated solutions for hyperscale data centers, including power generation, transmission, and fiber-optic networks. The company intends to secure energy capacity through a strategic partnership with Vistra, a US power company. This move follows Samsung's 2025 acquisition of FläktGroup, a specialist in data center HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.

The participating Samsung affiliates include:

  • Samsung Electronics
  • Samsung C&T
  • Samsung SDS
  • Samsung SDI
  • Samsung Life Insurance
  • Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance

In related news, the founding investor group for Helix also includes the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) and NVIDIA. By backing integrated infrastructure that combines cooling, power, and connectivity, Samsung is positioning itself as a foundational partner for the next generation of data-heavy industries. These developments suggest a strategic shift toward providing the essential utilities—both digital and electrical—that modern enterprises require to function.
