Samsung has been busy expanding its ecosystem of health tracking and high-end display technology. The company is currently pushing updates to its wearable lineup while simultaneously scaling its most advanced television hardware for the living room.
FDA-Cleared Sleep Apnea Detection Arrives for Galaxy Ring
A smart ring that monitors breathing disruptions marks a new direction for wearable health tech. Samsung is the first company to offer FDA-cleared over-the-counter sleep apnea risk detection on a smart ring, bringing the feature to the U.S. market for the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch9. What stands out visually in the Samsung Health Monitor app is an updated algorithm that provides an estimated number of breathing disruptions detected per hour.
To generate a report, the system requires specific data points from your sleep patterns. The tool analyzes vitals including blood oxygen levels and motion during rest. According to Samsung, the feature requires data from at least two nights of monitoring within a 10-day period. The manufacturer notes the following requirements and limitations:
- Intended for users aged 18 and older.
- Not intended for users previously diagnosed with sleep apnea.
- Available through the Samsung Health Monitor app.
- Received approval from Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Beyond the current flagship models, Samsung plans to expand this capability to older hardware. Support for the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch 8 will be added through future software updates.
Micro RGB TV Lineup Expands with Sub-100 Micrometer LEDs
On a different front, Samsung is scaling its premium display technology to new dimensions. The Samsung Micro RGB TV lineup utilizes microscopic LEDs smaller than 100 micrometers (µm) in size. The detail that matters here is the use of self-emissive RGB light sources, which produce color and light directly at the pixel level without the need for a traditional backlight.
The display surface is designed for high-light environments, featuring a Glare-Free coating that Samsung claims is resistant to fingerprints. To manage the massive amount of data required for these microscopic pixels, the TV is equipped with a powerful AI processor to enhance content quality.
These updates reflect Samsung's dual focus on miniaturization, whether it is shrinking consumer-grade sensors into a ring or fitting millions of microscopic LEDs into a home cinema display. As software updates bring these health features to older watches and new sizes arrive for Micro RGB screens, the company continues to bridge the gap between specialized hardware and consumer electronics.
